Employment Benefits in Spain

Spain offers a variety of statutory benefits and paid leave options for employees that reflect its commitment to work-life balance and employee well-being. Companies operating in Spain are required to comply with these provisions, which are considered some of the most generous in Europe.

Annual Leave

Minimum Paid Vacation: Employees in Spain are entitled to a minimum of 22 working days of paid annual leave per year.

Public Holidays: There are 14 public holidays, of which 2 can be replaced by regional holidays.

Maternity Leave: New mothers are eligible for 16 uninterrupted weeks of paid leave, which can be extended in cases of multiple births.

Paternity Leave: New fathers are provided with an equal duration of paid leave, ensuring equitable parental involvement.

Sick Leave

Employees are entitled to sick leave with pay, which is provided at 60% of the base regulatory salary from the fourth day of illness until the 20th day, and 75% thereafter, paid by Social Security. Employers may supplement this to maintain the worker’s full salary.

Additional Benefits

Christmas and Vacation Bonuses: A common practice in Spain, often equivalent to a month’s salary, paid in two installments.

Private Health Insurance: Some companies offer supplementary private health insurance, which is a valued benefit given the waiting times in the public health system.

Work Hours and Breaks

Standard Workweek: The typical workweek is 40 hours, with a maximum of 9 hours per day.

Rest Periods: Employees are entitled to a minimum rest period of 12 hours between workdays and a day and a half of uninterrupted rest each week, usually taken as Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

Bereavement Leave: Employees may take leave for the death of a family member, typically ranging from 2 to 4 days.

Marriage Leave: Employees are granted 15 calendar days of leave for their marriage.

Study Leave: Employees are allowed to take time off for official examinations and, in some cases, further education related to their job.
